E.C. powell fly rod
Question
I have a very old E.C.powell fly rod that is in excellent condition and about ten years ago i took it to a fly rod dealer and he said it had never been used. He also said it was probably made in the early 1920's. It has been stored in the original metal case horizontal at room temp. It has the words "the yuba" on it. I was wondering if you might know the value or any information on this piece or know anyone who would? I appreciate any help
Answer
Hi Eric,
E. C. Powell opened his rod shop in 1921 and continued building bamboo rods until he sold the business to his son-in-law Tony Maslan in 1954. Maslan continued making rods marked E. C. Powell until his death.
The inscription "the yuba" refers to a river in California. It is common for rod makers to use river names for various types of their rods.
I need some more information about the rod.
How long is it?
How many rod sections do you have?
Are all the rod sections the same length?
Do you have the original rod bag and rod tube?
Is the name E. C. Powell stamped into the reel seat?
Or, is it written/stamped in black on the rod shaft?
This information will help date the rod and estimate its value.
Thanks, Joe
