QuestionI have two twisted cane rods by the Calif. rod maker Sam Olin. My rods are documented on the olin rod web site, but the operator of the web site could not give any information as to the value of my rods. I do not know if Olin rods are collectable, just need to know if Olins are collectable. Thank You.
AnswerDon,
I have not seen twisted rods and have puzzled through the theory and math but I am a bit obsessed.
I think the average rod collector would not have heard of it.
I have not heard of him.
He is not in the price book Antique %26 Collectible Fishing Rods: Identification %26 Value Guide Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000) add about 30% for age of book.
Nor is he in Bamboo Rod Restoration Handbook by Michael Sinclair and Classic %26 Antique Fly-Fishing Tackle: A Guide for Collectors %26 Anglers by A.J. Campbell.
A relative of Sam Olin says" Mac, if you have never seen an "Olin Rod" you have missed a thing of beauty....
Sam Olin was my Grandfather and as a child I watched him spend many hours striping imported bamboo, gluing, wrapping, staining as well as the many other steps needed to hand make his rods. My recollection starts in the early 30's, if they are not collectable's they certainly should be as are all things of beauty.
My Son has more information if you are interested

He made straight as well as twisted.

I still think they are not collectable. Fishermen don't get the twisted cane and collectors have not heard of Olin.
Luck,
Mac
