QuestionI have a hexagon shaped brown 6.5 ft. rod that has an old Pflueger bait casting reel attached. Prominently displayed on the side of the rod is "T.T. Steele" in script. There are no other markings on the rod. It is in excellent shape with the only visible dammage being the eyes are missing. The brackets for the eyes are intact and original with the wrappings all matching and in excellent condition. The tip is a three sided tip. The handle is elongated and appears to be turned wood. Can you tell me anything about this rod?
AnswerHi Drew,
My guess in this one would be from the early 1900s and the inscripton would be the name of the original owner of the rod. Another possibility would be a model name used in a localized region or for a local sporting goods store. From your description the tiptop is three rings soldered together which would fit that era. The wooden handle would be typically used on a rod built for saltwater use. It would most likely be what is called a boat rod; one used for bottom fishing.
If you can send photos of the rod to
[email protected] I'll review them and see if I can identify the original maker.
This type of rod was made by several companies and marketed under a variety of models names and even other company names. The guides should be replaced to restore its value.
Thanks, Joe
