gleibe fiberglass fishing rod
Question
I just bought a gleibe fiberglass fishing rod and Kingfisher ck-74 reel at a flea market. The rod has a beautiful carved wooden handle, about half as long as the rest of the rod. The reel has great etching of a compass with a sailfish emblem. Do you know if these are from the same era - and when that might be? Thanks
Answer
Hi Bob,
Gliebe Sporting Goods was a retail outlet in Brooklyn, NY. They did not make rods, rather they had rods made for them by other companies and the Gliebe name applied. Yours is in the style of a boat rod which would be used for saltwater fishing or large freshwater fish. Fiberglass rods became popular in the late 1950s and your rod is likely from the 1960s-1970s era. The reel could be from the same time period...I'm not an expert on reels.
Value of the rod would be in the $20-$40 range depending on actual condition.
Thanks, Joe
