QuestionDear Jack,
We have been reading some of your articles on "All Experts.com." We moved to the Bainbridge area last year
and we have been pretty successful in catching bass on the main part of the lake north of Wingate's.
However, now we are trying to concentrate on the stripers and hybrids down by the dam. This morning we
caught 2 hybrids about 2 pounds each just west of the dam going towards Snead's Landing.
As we got closer to Snead's Landing we caught some smaller hybrids. We were trolling with rattletraps
and were surprised how even the little ones really grabbed the rattletraps.
Before we went out, we saw Jack Wingate and he said to go down towards Sneads Landing and out
to the Indian Mounds. We are not familiar with where the Indian Mounds are. I read one of your articles
explaining that there is a set of unmarked pilings in a quadrangle. We don't remember seeing them.
Are they near Snead's? Are they near any of the channel markers? We caught the hybrids in about 12 feet of water.
You also mentioned a "tower" which marks the River channel and said to turn right there and head due West to
find the Indian Mounds. Is this "tower" near the beginning of the Chatahoochee markers?
We really would appreciate your help.

AnswerJoy and Roger; I have not been down to the area of the Indian mounds for quite a while. They may have removed those pilings but I do not understand why because the water within those pilings is only about a foot deep on top of the mound. If you do not have a lake map I strongly urge you to buy one. The Indian mounds are located just to the west of the last point along the North shore but this is hard to describe. The tower you mention is really what is called a day marker for the barges that occasionally move through the lake. If you look at your map you should note that the Flint river comes down from the northeast and joins the Chattahoochee about a mile above the dam. The flint and the Chattahoochee each have their own markers. The Hooch has mostly day markers while the Flint has some day markers and more buoys. As you come down the flint from Wingates you should see on your right the Spring Creek channel coming into the Flint. Then a little farther Sealies Islands lower end has a point with a landing with smaller pilings heading out to the main lake. The whole lake is marked with these pilings (pairs of single pilings with red or green reflectors) Boats should always run in either the tugboat channels in the rivers or between the smaller marked pilings. This lake has millions of stumps many of which are at or just under the water line and they can ruin a good day if you hit one with your gas motor running at high speed. The mouth of Spring Creek comes out about half way between Sealies point and the mouth of Fishpond drain. Following the shoreline about 300-400 yards out and heading west toward the day mark in the Chattahoochee lies the Indian mounds. Unfortunately they are not shown on any map that I have seen. This is very difficult without each of us having a map that I could refer you to.
I have an idea. You buy a lake map and I will meet you someplace and I will show you not only the Indian mounds but several other place to fish both for stripers and largemouth bass. I come to Bainbridge a couple of times a week or more and could meet you at Harddes or some place like that. I will give you my phone number and you can call me and we can set up a time to meet.
Maybe we could get together and go fishing sometime. Hey I am talking to Roger not trying to make a date with Joy. LOL. I am harmless anyway as I am 77 years old and my wife is even older. She, unfortunately, can not go fishing with me anymore because she is paralyzed from the waist down and in a nursing home in Donalsonville. As soon as I get this sent I am going in to see her. I am serious about going fishing either in my boat or yours and I mean both of you.
If the getting together in Bainbridge sounds good give me a call and we will set up the time and place to meet.
Thanks for calling on me to answer your question.
