Mohawk steel fly rod and...
Question
I have a few old fly rods I was wondering if there is value, or if I should keep on the wall for decoration. Could not find much info on the web.
1. The first is unusual. It is a 7 foot steel telescopic fly rod with three eyelets, cork handle, and original looking small reel with no markings. The rod is marked as Mohawk with what appears to be initials HI and the number 3308.
2. Second is a mint, never used, 2 piece, 7'7", 7 eyelets, cork handle Langley flyrod. Dont know enough to tell you the material.
3. Third fly rod appears to be custom or homemade with no markings. Is there a place to take it to for input?
4. Finally, I have a Martin Reel Co, model 67A reel made in Mohawk, NY.
Answer
Hi Bruce,
#1 - these rods are fairly common and were likely made by someone like American Fork & Hoe, Gephart, Orchard, etc. They are sold under a variety of names as many of the rod making firms and most sporting goods stores sold them at one time. Value is typically in the $5-$20 range depending on actual condition.
#2 - Langley made pretty decent rods and reels, typically fiberglass, but not a high degree of collector interest. In Mint condition this rod should bring around $30-$40.
#3 - short answer is not really. You might take it to a local professional rod builder and learn something about the blank and components used on the rod. It may also be that the markings have simply disappeared over time and the rod is a recognizable brand.
#4 - reels are not my area of expertise...however, Martin reels are fairly inexpensive and most used ones tend to run in the $5-$15 range.
Thanks, Joe
