bass fishing/rod/line equipment
Question
hey man, i usually fish shore line, small lakes and ponds and such, since im to
broke to get a boat. and i love bass, thats all i go for, i catch good and
everything, i just got some questions on my rod set up. i like to use small
light spin cast rods, they are around 5ft, a ugly stik, quantum, and
shakespeare cirrus. i like them smaller cause i fish soft plastics a lot and i feel
everything better and they are easier to walk with. i use 10lb 100% fcarbon
trilene and 8lb clear stren. all the rods say to us 4-6lb line, one has 6-8lb. so
my question is, even tho it says to use an estimated lb line, does it matter if i
use heavier line?? sometimes my line seems to unwind itself and gets loops
and tangles. but i see lots of bass pros on tv saying they have 20lb line and
even 30lb line and like 6ft rods with plastics and spinners and they say it
helps if they get caught on some trees or cover. anyway sorry if im like
rambling, im just goin on a trip to tennessee soon and they give me a boat to
use, so im wondering if i should get new equipment and heavier line? thanks
for reading, feel free to just explain all line and road detail u know to me if u
dont get my question, thanks a lot man.
Answer
Unless you are gonna be fishin where the weeds are so thick you can't believe fish live in there or in heavy timber areas you should be fine. When I use mono or flourocarbon lines, I tend to use around 12-14 lb. test on all of my casting outfits. On my spinning outfits I tend to use 8-12 lb. test. But I regulary just use 15-30 lb. Power-Pro braided line. I like it more because you feel so much more. You can put a flourocarbon leader on that braided line and still feel a minnow fart on the end of your line. I especially enjoy using it when worm fishing. It's so sensitive you can feel the worm wiggle on the way back. But as for you overall set up, you should be good. But, you should still try a 6-7 foot rod for further casts. Hope you do well.
