Tosaku Fly Rod
Question
I purchased a Tosaku fly rod in a wooden box. It has a paper with it and I think it is an AF101 Fly casting rod 9', 3 pcs, I extra tip, w/box, Shpg wt 600g, From $5.00 up, Shpg charge $1.40 per. There is a tray in the box and has nothing in it. Do you have any idea of a value. It is in mint condition and looks like it has never been used.
Thank You, Paul Davis
Answer
Hi Paul,
This is another of the many brand names of bamboo fly rods produced in post WW II occupied Japan. Collector value is pretty much non-existant for these rods so value is going to be in the $20-$40 range depending on actual condition.
The tray would have held line, flies, weights, bobbers and a small line nipper in most of these kits. The rod would use a modern 6wt line...maybe a 5wt or 7wt depending on construction of the rod.
Some of these old Japanese rods do make decent fishing rods so give it a try and see if you like it. Check it over for loose ferrules, wraps and any signs of delamination or damage to the bamboo. The old glues can dry out over time and introduce problems for these rods.
