value of bamboo fly rod
Question
Curious about value of fly rod given to me. It is a E. W. Edwards & Sons, 9', 3 pc., 6-1/4 wt. (the letters EU3 or 5 appear after line weight on tube label. The rod is in excellent condition i.e. no dings in cork, stripper and all guides intact, wrapping and varnish still like new. Signature "EW Edwards "De Luxe" is perfect. There is some sort of residue on the reel seat but this looks to be easily removed if necessary. Reel seat butt cap also original. It came with original tube (label still mostly in tact) Label states built in Mt. Carmel, Conn. Original bag (w/ "Edwards Fishing Rods" on it). It also has two rod tips. The only draw back is one of the rod tips was cut back to use for trolling. Georeous rod w/ maroon and gold wraps and a maroon, fading to amber, colored stripping guide insert. The label is worn where I might possibly idendify a model but it is a six strip bamboo. Any help appreciated. Thanks.
Answer
Eric,
Model is an "Deluxe". It was made by Gene Edwards.
Not sure what"EU3 or 5" could be. Line weight could be 5 , E or "HEH or HFH".
Price Book: Antique & Collectable Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000) add about 30% for age of book
Homel gives the 9' E.W. Edwards "Deluxe" fly rod with an extra tip, 3 sections a value of $100, 235 and $375 for poor, good, excellent condition respectively.

How do you know the rod was shortened for trolling? Not something I have ever heard of on a fly rod. I have seen lots of broken tips.

Mac
