identify rod
Question
I would like to determine the maker and possible age and value of a split bamboo tonkin cane rod. no markings that i can see. It has a metal case along with a cloth case. It has 3 sections (3' each)totalling 9' and an extra tip. the only markings are on the cloth case and handle. Handle reads "unity hardware company Torrington, Conn. USA" Tag reads same plus "split bamboo rod genuine tonkin cane." also says "Reg. U.S. Pat. Off. torr, conn. W601 Made in USA. Hardened steel snake guides and stainless steelchome plated stripper guide and hardened steel top".Right side of tag is missing along with some words. the part i can read says "reel seat and cork grip."
Answer
Hi Erica,
Your rod was sold by Union Hardware Company or Torrington, Conn, USA. It was probably made by another company under contract to Union Hardware to supply trade rods labeled as union Hardware. Bamboo fly rods sold by U-H typically are 8'6" or 9'0" in length and come in three sectiosn with an extra tip section, plus a rod bag and aluminum tube...as yours does. Heddon lists Union Hardware as a trade rod customer and I believe Horrocks-Ibbotson made rods for U-H; and possibly even Montague made some rods for U-H.
The 9'0" model in Good-Very Good condition would be in the $100-$140 range; and in Excellent-Mint condition would be in the $150-$200 range, Value is dependant on the actual condition of the rod, bag and tube. Value may also be affected by the identity of the original maker, if that can be determined.
Thanks, Joe
