QuestionAmong other things my mother gave me upon my fathers passing were several old fishing rods, two of which are Horrocks-Ibbotson fly rods. The 3 piece rod is 9'2" with a decal that has the white diamond with the red H-I in it centered between the words Fish Rod. Above the diamond it says Genuine Tonkin Cane and the company name is below the diamond. There is a small scrape, defacing the I in Fish and a smaller on just before the F, other than that, the decal is excellent condition. The reel seat is brown plastic and the rod over all I would say is in very good condition as I see no scrapes or blemishes (other than the decal) Cork handle is in very good condition with no dirt or grime embedded in it.
The other is a 2 piece 6'2" rod with no decal and a blue/gray reel seat. The cork handle is very beefy and squarish. As with the first, the finish is very good with all guides in place with blue and white wrappings
Not even sure these rods were ever fished. They are both dirty from sitting in the garage for years and would like to clean it up. I'm guessing a mild soap with a soft cloth or soft tooth brush would be my best bet. Would you happen to know the value of either of these rods?
AnswerHi Frank,
First, are both of thjese rods made of bamboo?
The H-I fly rod you describe was made in the 1945-1950 time frame. It should also have a model name or number written on the butt section of the rod in white ink. If not, please tell me what color the wraps are that hold the guides in place.
Is the 6'2" rod also a fly rod? Is it marked as an H-I rod? Do you have ability to take and send pictures via email? If so, send me some pictures of the rods at
[email protected] and I'll review them for you.
Yes, mild dish soap and a soft cloth should do the job. If they are bamboo, do not put them away damp...allow them to air dry over night before storing them back in the tube.
I can help with the value once we determine the models.
Thanks, Joe
