Gliebe 297
Question
Joe,
Saw your remarks on the Gliebe 620. I have a Gliebe 297, very nice shape. 8 foot. Was wondering if you would be so kind as to take a stab at its value? I also have an 8 foot all wood rod with only a partial label "...rost &..." New York City. Frost? I know there isn't much to go on here, but since it's all wood, has got to be pretty old. Looks like ceramic? inserts in the guides. These are two of about 15 rods I have, along with 3 Penn reels (all 155's I think) and an old closed face "spin cast 77" reel. I wanted to sell them all, hopefully as a group. Any ideas best place to list them aside from Ebay? Any help would be appreciated.
thanks,
Rob
Answer
Hi Robert,
I doubt there is much difference in value estimate for your rod, probably somehting in the $25-$40 range.
The all wood rod is most likely an older greenheart wood rod sold by the H. J. Frost & Company organization in New York City. This company began in 1896 so it would be appropriate for them to sell greenheart rods along with bamboo rods.
The guides are most likely agate lined. Value on the greenheart rod would be more like $50-$150 range depending on the actual condition of the rod.
H.J. Frost did not build rods, they had their rods built by another company, usually Horrocks-Ibbotson for their bamboo rods...I do not know who built the greenheart rods for them.
Thanks, Joe
