South Bend cane casting rod
Question
I was recently given a 2 piece bamboo casting rod made by South Bend with the number 15-9' on the blank just above the cork. I doubt if this rod has ever seen a fishing line or reel. The cork is spotless and the guides show NO wear. What can you tell me about this rod and can you direct me to where I can read up on it's origins and history?
Answer
Bert,
I am assuming you do not have a fly rod and that the reel (seat) is above the cork handle.

Casting / spin rods are just not collected like fly rods - even bamboo.
You are not going to find the history of non fly rods. I've looked very hard. It coincides with the above statement.
Price Book:
Antique & Collectible Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000) add about 30% for age of book.
Homel mentions 4 spin casting rods. They top out at 75-95 in excellent condition.
But I would be shocked if you got 50 for it.
Luck,
Mac
