QuestionJoe, I have two old, ? 40-60s, 6' one piece heavy duty bamboo bluewater rods. The only markings are 'Kingfisher' on the reel seats....they are in fairly good condition, but need several of the guides re-wrapped...interesting pattern on the bamboo...small 'dots' all over the surface? Wanted to know if they had any value, if they might be worth restoration, or should I use them for tomato stakes. Thanks. Squeak Smith, Trout Unlimited
AnswerHi Squeak,
Most likely these rods were made by Montague or Horrocks-Ibbotson and they may be more like 1930s-1940s. If they are post WW II rods, there could be other makers as options. Photos might help figure out the actual maker.
The older bamboo boat rods are gaining in popularity and value as people rediscover the virtues of fishing bamboo. These would likely be valued in the $80-$100 range if restored. You should be able to get the guides rewrapped at a reasonable cost. I would hate to see them become tomato stakes.
The dots on the surface sound interesting. Again, a photo would help determine whether or not they are a problem or simply some natural blemishes. If you can send phots to
[email protected] I'll review them for you.
Thanks, Joe
