Question
mystery reel
My father had two fly reels that I have questions about. One is a Colgrove Tackle Co. the 2nd is very old and unmarked that I can see. I found a photo online of one that looks the same. I have attached. I believe the reel was my grandfather's, used with his 1913 bamboo rod. I hope you can give me a rough date of manufacture, perhaps a maker and a value.
Thank you so much!
Becky
AnswerHi
the reel in the photo is a Skeleton Fly reel. The name describes the open panels on the side that allows the fly line to dry easier. They are pretty common, low cost reel design. Unfortunately its hard to tell the maker without a marker. Hendryx, Shakespeare and Meisselbach are a few of the possible makers. This reel is pre WWII. $10-$15.
The other reel was designed in the late 40s, so probably a 1950s reel. They run $10-20, more if you have the original box.
