Bamboo rod information
Question
I'm interested in finding out the age/value of a South Bend rod I just acquired.
It is a bamboo South Bend rod with six sided flat edges, 8 1/2 ft. long with
two separate top sections. It has a serial number above the cork which reads
"Z7445- 8 1/2. Any information you could give me about the rod would be
appreciated.
Answer
Paul,
I am assuming that the handle is above the reel , that your rod is a fly rod. I am pretty sure that SB did not have serial numbers. I have seen 75-100 of their rods and none had serial numbers. They made just too many medium to lower quality /priced rods. They do have a model number system, either 2-3 digits numbers not letters. So until I know the model I am just guessing at value but within a known price span.
Price Book:
Antique & Collectible Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000) add about 30% for age of book.
Homel gives the South Bend Model #24 fly rod 8 1/2' with an extra tip, 3 sections the value of $35, 90 and $165 for poor, good, excellent condition respectively.
Homel gives the SB fly rod an average price of 37.40, 95.20 and 175.20 for poor, good, excellent condition respectively.
Bamboo Rod Restoration Handbook by Michael Sinclair would help you date it. I own it but need a detailed description or pictures of all writing , labels or logos on the rod. I believe you have mis read that "serial number" and it is a model number like 25 or 290 with some other info like line size "E or HDH".
Any of the books I refer to can be found in most major library systems.
Luck,
Mac
