Orvis Battenkill Deluxe Fly Rods
Question
Hello,
As a young boy in the late 60's I was introduced to fly fishing and was tying my own flies at the age of 13 in 1967. I ordered materials from my Orvis catalog and always dreamed of buying an Orvis bamboo fly rod. They were only about $100 back then but hey, $100 was a lot of money back then!
Anyway, I finally looked on ebay about 12 years ago and picked up a Battenkill Deluxe 7' S/N 19239. I wanted a small rod for the small streams I fished. I already had a 1970's Orvis Featherweight fly reel.
So in 2004, I become a first time dad to twin boys at the age of 50! I thought I would see if I could find another Battenkill Deluxe. It took me a year or so but I finally grabbed another one off ebay, identical model S/N 19242. I researched both rods on the Orvis data base and found they were both built by George Reid and Cal Skinner on the same day, May 10, 1956. The harder task was finding another featherweight fly reel which took over 2 years but I finally nabbed it on ebay. Both rods are in very good condition each with 2 tips.
So my question is how much are these rods really worth and does having the two rods so close in S/N make them more collectable?
thank you
Answer
Doug,
That's a great story. Thanks for the question.
Reels would add to the value but I don't think having two would be a benefit to most collectors, unless they were twins. I suppose if someone put them together in a single carrier and marketing them as 56 twins it would help.
Who made the feather weight reels? I have Antique & Collectible Fishing Reels: Identification, Evaluation & Maintenance Homel, & Jellison. 1996 or you can find it in your local library.
Price Book:
Antique & Collectible Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000) add about 30% for age of book.
Homel gives the Orvis "Deluxe" fly rod 7' with an extra tip, 2 sections the value of $150, 385 and $675 for poor, good, excellent condition respectively.
Luck,
Mac
