Pre-tournament speech.

Question
Ladies and gentlemen:
I have played the game for 20 years (nothing at any level to talk about), and have been coaching Select for 3 years. I currently coach 16 year-old girls. This is my third year with two girls, second with 6 and first with two.
They're improving every day. Last season, our first real season together, we couldn't win a game in the early going. By the end of the season, they'd moved into the top 12 teams in the region.
What can I say to them to make them realize that they are good and can play with anyone at anytime?
Our goal is to move into the top five this year. I have two of the best setters in the region, and numerous other solid players. When they play their "A" game, they're exciting to watch. How can I get them to bottle that attitude and believe in themselves? What can I say in the pre-tournament speech that will get them to knock down walls? Thanks.
Sincerely,
Bob Mayhall

Answer
Bob,
I believe that there are a few things you can do to give your players the confidence they need. That is what is missing.  They need to believe that they have complete control over whether they win or lose.

First, as a coach, you need to be sure they are absolutely ready to play.  By that, I mean, whenever you are in a situation to scout another team..you should.  Give your players all of the information about that other team.  They will feel like they KNOW everything that team has to offer and could throw at them.  Preparation is a HUGE issue.  Imagine the confidence of your girls, if they believe they know every move the other team may make..and how to stop it. It will only take one or 2 plays for them to believe in themselves.  Second, as a coach, you need to encourage them to celebrate when they have EARNED points.

Another method to motivate is to pick some video clips of your players making some great plays/saves.  This will boost confidence as well. Always stay positive...always! Even when you have to be tough..dont break them down mentally.
Lastly, this sounds really "cheesy" but, before our post-season play began, I rented the movie "RUDY".  He is smaller, less talented, but plays with more heart than anyone can measure...he never let up and always..always believed in himself and his teamates..he was a true winner, and after watching that movie..as a team..they will leave the room wanting to play..they wont be able to help it..its contagious..and if you can affect one or two of your players..the others will follow. It is a feel-good movie, that has a great message about heart, work ethic, and belief. Hope this helped a little...Tina Rogers-Smith
