A few questions actually...
Question
Hi
A few questions rose up while i was playing volleyball at school and since things can get a beat heated i think it would be best if an expert like yourself would be able to answer them.
Here they are...
1. If you hit the ball into the net can you hit it again? (i already know the answer to this one but i plan to print this for all those other teachers who think its ok to hit it twice but if i am wrong please dont be harsh ok?)
2. This one is about overhead serves (if that is the term for it) When you go to serve is it possible to actually take back the serve and if so, how long before it is counted as a serve.
3. I have started refereeing (only at a social level) and i was wondering if there is any tips that you might be able to give me. I realise you might not be able to help me with this particular problem but after the first match i had i know i could use all the help i could get.
Thanks for your time and help

Answer
BJ,
If you hit the ball into the net, as long as it was NOT the 3rd "touch" on the ball, it can be hit again...but by a different player. Each person may only contact the ball once until another plays the ball...you may not hit the ball 2 times or more in a row.
Overhand serving..If you toss the ball and catch the ball, you may have 1 more attempt to serve, you only have 5 seconds per attempt to serve the ball. If you make contact with the ball while serving, you do not get another chance.
As far as tips for refereeing...they offer certification classes. My suggestion to you would be to sign up for one. The rules seem to change almost every year now, and vary based upon the level of play(ie. grade school, high school, club ball, college). It will be important to be trained by professionals...no offense meant here, but there is nothing worse than a "ref" who doesnt know the rules of the game. Bad refereeing, can swing a game..its important to have all of the facts, and know all of the rules, and understand the game.
Hope I helped....
