Club tryouts
Question
Hi, My name is Heather, And I'm 13. I have been trying and trying to get my overhand serve, and nothing seems to work for me. It's usually too short, or out to the side to far. I am trying out for a club team in the 14U catergory, and I would like to know how to overhand serve from a professional, because none of my friends can help me. Also, what do they look for at club tryouts? And what do most clubs make you do? The tryouts are a week from today, and I really need to make the team, it's really important to me, so If you could help me with my serve and answer my question about club that would be amazing, Thank you.
Answer
Hey don't beat yourself up. Many young players could not get that ball over the net. But, let me ask you. Can you do an underhand serve? If you can underhand serve it 9/10 times in to the court, than you are a valuable asset to the team. But, if you really want to learn how to serve, club ball is exactly where you will learn. While we can discuss mechanics, there are so many different body motions, that really I would have to see your serve in order to correct it.
What do clubs look for? Well, at the 14U level, they are looking for motivated players that are willing and able to learn. Really most players don't really now how to play very well when they are 13. Club ball is for taking young athletes and teaching them to play. So, if you want to make the team, show plenty of motivation, always be a plesant person, always hussle to whatever you are doing, keep your mouth shut and ears open, and most of all, look like you are having a great time and are willing to learn.
Hey good luck, keep motivated and let me know how it turns out!
