Girls Middle School Volleyball
Question
I started a team here at Smoky Mountain about 4 yrs ago, the girls are getting better, and this year I thought it was our year, came up short, 4 place out of 8 teams, which I think is pretty good considering. I have a great bunch returning this year, but alot of them are too busy with hair, etc. I ask them to run, then they say we are mad at you. I think my feelings are getting too involved with how these girls feel. I want to be respected but want them to have fun and win, any suggestions?
Answer
You are their coach and your feelings are definitely going to get involved. But, you have to approach it like a parent and realize that their feelings are going to "get hurt" from time to time.
You are going up against girls that will play on your every emotion in order to get what they want. They will group together against you and for you.
What can you do? Never back down from your decisions but don't discount their complaints. Give them a chance to explain why they don't want to do this and tell them you will consider it for next time, but for know, you have a plan that will help them reach their next level of performance and you want them to do their best.
Always always always encourage your players. They want leadership. They want you to provide motivation, direction and purpose. If you do that, they will follow you coach.
