QuestionI coach a 17&under club volleyball team. I like to really focus on developing their
ball control abilities. I was wondering if you had any good ball control drills for
the beginning of practice, like for a warmup.
AnswerLindsey,
There are so may ball control drills I don't know where to start.
This drill called 10/20/30. 1 ball 2 players. Player 1 has her back to the net. Player 2 is facing her on the 10 foot line. Have them pass 25 - 50 balls. Make sure of good form and height of the ball. After the set number of passes have player 2 move back 10 feet. Pass set number of balls and then have player 2 move back 10 more feet (to the end line). Have them do the set number and re do the drill with hand setting.
Here are a few pepper drills....
Regular Pepper. Two players pass. Bump, Set, Spike. Repeat.
Overhand Pepper. Have players hit high balls so that her partner has to use the overhand passing technique.
Block Pepper. Pass (Player 1), Set (Player 2), Simulate Block (Player 1).... Player 2 comes in to cover and passes the ball, Player 1 Sets and and Player 2 Simulates Block. Continue Drill.
Two pass Peppers.
Forearm Pass to self and set to partner.
Forearm Pass to self and Back Pass to Partner
Forearm/Overhand Pass to self Down Ball to partner.
PASS AND GO....
5X 3X 1X 2X 4X 6X
1X passes to 2X and runs to her right to go behind 6X. 2X passes to 3X and then runs behind 5X. Drill is done for set number of consecutive passes or time limit.. Can be done over a net, without a net, with both overhand and underhand passes or with only overhand or underhand passes.
If you need any more or you have trouble understanding these. You can e-mail me at

What is the name of your club team? Are you going to be at any national tournaments?
Good Luck,
Steve
