Setters at the college level
Question
HI Steve,
My daughter is 16 and is a 6'1"(we're not sure she's finished growing) left handed setter and loves the games. She can also play OH and Middle. She didn't start playing until she was a freshmen in high school but she's picked the game up quickly and wants to play in college. We have had a few schools ask about her after club tournaments. My question is, what can she do to get noticed by a D1 school? Her high school coach is working with her to help in that area but I would like to know what she can do, or what we can do as parents to help as well.
Thanks,
Cindy
Answer
Cindy,
A 6'1" lefty setter, your daughter is a coaches dream. Here are a few things to do. Get her on a good club that travels to at least three or four of the major tournaments. Vegas or Crossroads is a must. Go to summer camps that specialize in setters and camps of schools that your daughter may want to attend. Make a skills/game tape and send it out to schools that you and your daughter may like. Make some unofficial visits before her senior year. You do this because you may find one early that you love and there may only be one scholarship available.
I coach at Fordham University (which is a Division I school in NYC that plays out of the Atlantic 10). When you make the tape send me one at Fordham c/o Steve Hagenlocher and I will tell you what I think.
Good luck and I hope this was helpful.
Steve
