Sand volleyball

Question
I just signed up on a team that plays friday nights in the sand. Im 6' 180 right handed and have 14" jump from a stand still. the probelm is i usally play for fun in the grass or indoor, so i have a hard time moving in the sand. I feel old and slow and cant jump. Do have any tips or hints 2 help me out. Or some drills. or does everyone feel that way at first?  thanx

Answer
I have to laugh when I read this.  I know EXACTLY what you mean!  In fact, with over 15 years of sand play under me, I get that same feeling when I get back into a new season.  The good news is every time you get out there you're going to get better.  Lateral movements will become smoother, your jump will get better, and most importantly your timing will get in sync, which is important.  You can certainly do drills if you'd like to put the time in, and I recommend you run those drills at the end of your playing session.  running drills when you're already tired is a good thing.  You'll notice a significant increase in your play each time you get out there the following day.   Your drills can be whatever you want, keep it interesting.  I liked to work on my movements from the serve line up to the net, and work on my blocks, then back into transition for defense.  It's something you can do alone if you can't find anyone else to train with you, and it works wonders!  Just moving in the sand is going to help you out.  How much you put into it will determine what you get out of it.  Let me know how it works for you!!
