1 step approve
Question
I'm trying to teach mt daughter that a 1-step approach not only gives you as much range as a 3-step, but is more versitile, quicker and more powerful due to it's more explosive nature. Her coaches are trying to get her to use a 3-step approach, and to start her approach just as the setter begins to set. Since she is a teen, she doesn't agree with her dad. Any thoughts?
Answer
David,
A middle usually uses a 3 step approach because of the distance they have to move in transition. Outsides can use either a 3 or 4. Most of our girls use a 3 step approach because we set a very fast ball.
My advice to you is do one of two things. Either let her coaches coach your daughter (you may be right but you will confuse your daughter and make it harder for her to learn) or find another club where the coaches have the same philosophy as you do.
I believe it is also harder for a player to learn a 3 step approach when they are younger and do not have an accurate and consistent setter. If your daughter is young let her learn the easier approach first and then progress to the harder one.
I coached my teenage daughter......so I know what you are going through and you have my deepest sympathies.
Good Luck
Steve
