Question
QUESTION: hi well me and my friends really want to make the 7th grade volley ball team but well i can't over hand sever and my frindes can and i only have 2 months is there any way that i can be able to do an over hand sever in 2 months oh and my brother wants to do the mesuments of the feild for 7th grade

ANSWER: kim

This may be the question I am asked most by young female athletes.  The first thing you need to know is that serving will come.  Work at it with confidence and you will soon see improvement.

The first thing I would do (and had my younger players do) is serve from the 10' line.  Get that over 25 times in a row.  Take two steps back and get that over 25 times in a row (or when you feel good about the serve).  Continue to do this until you are now serving from the end line with little problems.  Some players don't like to do this but it will help.

The other thing you can do but it doesn't work as well is try to serve the ball out deep.  Don't aim for the court or for a zone; aim to hit the back board behind the end line.  One thing I've noticed is that players who serve short try to hard not to serve long (as silly as that may sound).

Good luck and let me know if this worked.

If I understand your brothers question, as far as I know the volleyball court is the same dimensions at every level.  60' by 30'.

QUESTION: well i was looking online because that what the coach told be to do to help and i found this one place that said you should make a box 2' by 2' and throw the ball up and should land their every time and once it dose then it will improve your sever will that work also

Answer
Kim,

Yes the toss is VERY VERY important.  The best toss is about 2' over your head and a foot or so in front of you.  After a year of practice (or so) you should be able to make contact with the ball with your eyes closed.  The more consistent your toss the more consistent your serve.

Good luck,
Steve
