shoulder soreness...

Question
Hi, I've played casual volleyball at school for the last two years. I wasn't taught very well, and as a result I think my hitting form was often bad.
I sometimes have a kind of nagging shoulder soreness, which I think is rotator cuff. How common is it to hurt your rotator cuff, and how significant? I know you're not a doctor, but from you experience what do you recommend. There is no swelling or lack of ROM really, just an aggrivating soreness sometimes that's hard to describe. Any advice is welcomed, thanks!

Answer
Peter-
Thanks for your question.  Let's take a look.  Although I'm not sure of your age, you stated that you've played casually over the past two years, so I don't think that you're overworking your arm. And assuming that you've matured, that is, your muscles have fully developed, I don't think thats the issue either.  With that said, I have a hard time admitting that your swing is so far off that you're causing pain.  If I were you?  I'd ask around.  Find the guy in the gym who looks like his game is on, and ask him what he thinks of your swing.  On the spot corrections are the best way to improve any aspect of your game.
If you're older, in your 30's, and you're just getting started with the sport, that pain you're feeling...is felt by most of us!! Bottom line is, if it hurts, give it rest, and ice it when you're done doing a workout.  Sometimes, a couple weeks off will do wonders, and that soreness will go away.  Outside of that, I'd head to your doc and see what he says.  Let me know how that works, and get back to me if you'd like.  Take care and keep on playin!

Matt
