scoring

I am new to the whole volleyball thing and just like to watch not play.  I was wondering how you determine the score of a volleyball game.

 Scoring in volleyball has evolved in the last 10 years.  When I was growing up playing on the beaches down in Florida, and even my college career, we utilized what is known as a "Side Out" scoring system.  Meaning, in order to score, you've got to have the serve.  I believe it created a lot of stale mates, and games could actually drag on for hours if defenses continued to side out.
   With that said, now in volleyball scoring has changed so that the receiving team has an oportunity to score, not just the serving team.  It creates a faster paced game, and the games typically dont last as long.
