Penetrating the net

Question
We play on an adult education recreational league and a question arose last night which caused some debate. During one particular play, a player completely crossed the center line into the opponents court. She did not interfere with the play of the ball however. Most people felt that this was a rules violation because both of her feet were completely crossed over the line, but two people said that it was not a violation because she did not interfere with the play. Who is correct?

Answer
Michele,

If you are playing co-ed both of you are correct.  In the men's game you may not cross the center line with your entire foot or hand.  In the women's game you may cross over the line and if you do not interfere with the play there is no violation.  The problem with the rule it is totally subjective to the referee of that night.
