Jump Serving
Question
Okay, I have just recently read your instructions on how to jump serve correctly. I have been jump serving about 3-4 years now, and I'm still not getting the footing down right. Do you have to take 4 steps or can you take 5? I have been taking 5 steps the whole time I've been jump serving. No one on my team, nor my coach knows how to jump serve. Any suggestions?
Answer
Hey Rachel!
There are as many ways to jump serve as there are ways to fix your hair. Every tournament I go to, I see another way I've never seen before.
My stepdaughter came home from the UNC camp about 5 years ago with a jump floater. She's been doing the same jump serve ever since. Her teammates who jump serve also do the same one. It's 3 steps. It's now what I use and it's what I teach during my private lessons. And it's also used by all the girls in the Roanoke Va area (unless they made up their own.)
My stepdaughter is the libero for a D1 team. Do you want to see a video of my stepdaughter's jump floater? I have it posted on line. You can copy the following and paste it into your browser.

Is this the only way? No way! Is it the simplest? I think so. The process is "Left, toss, right, left, hit." That's it. It's easy to do correctly with just a little practice.
