QuestionCan a back court player pretend to be in the front court and fake an attack at the net to try and draw a blocker? Or, do they have to take off behind the attack line to fake the attack?
AnswerYou mentioned in your response, "I thought it was ruled as an illegal attack. (The same as blocking)."
Well, the block rule has changed in the National Federation rule book 3 years ago. I think USAV changed it also.
If a back row player jumps to block, but never touches the ball, no violation has occurred. It's odd for us who've been coaching for a while. Yet, if the back row player is blocking together with a front row play (a collective block) and either girl touches the ball, then it's illegal. Third change: A block cannot occur unless the blocker's hands are above the top of the net when contact occurs. These three changes took a while for me to assimilate. It was rough.
