QuestionWhat is the best way to learn how to play indoor volleyball quickly? Try outs are in 1 month at school and I have never played wonder if I should get a personal trainer ASAP. Any suggestions for the Los Angeles, San Gabriel Valley, California areas. I want to make the team. Thank you. What kind of things can/should I do when I don't have a partner to help me get on my middle school team? I do have a ball.
AnswerHey Martin:
Thank you visiting www.allexperts.com. I don't know if you're going to like my answer, but here comes the best answer I have.
a) Your best hope of making the team is that most of kids who try out are just like you -- inexperienced. B/c unless some freak-of-nature tall, or freak-of-nature athletic, then you are sure to get cut if a load of experienced players show up at tryouts. Volleyball is like tennis....it's a game of skill. It's not something that can be learned overnight.
b) You may want to call some area coaches, YMCA's, volleyball "places," etc. and see if anyone offers private lessons. These may run up to $70 an hour. :(
c) What about your own school? Are they offering any open gyms before tryouts? Your coach may not be able to offer any b/c some states are really strict on this sort of stuff. But you need to find out! Now!
d) You mentioned that you want to teach yourself....I don't see teaching yourself something that you don't know....unless you have a lot of video of Olympic vball or college vball. That would help some if you can copy how to dig, pass, set, spike and block. But no net? No coach/teacher? No friends to play with?
Like I said, you may not like my answers.
I have no good news for you. :( I'm sorry.
But you have a month to try to find open gyms, lessons, video, etc. And anything is possible! GOOD LUCK and tell me how you do! Please visit me at

If you don't make the team, but you still DO want to, you'll have 9 months to go to camps, play club ball, play beach vball, etc.
