How many of coachs own kids can he coach on an out-of-season travel team?
Question
My question is can a person who coached this past fall for a high school team also coach a aau team this spring with girls who are all (8 or more) from that same school? Can they have someone else coach and have her help out or is she not allowed to be part of any of it?
Answer
Good evening and welcome to www.allexperts.com.
The answer to your question completely depends upon the state you live in.
For example: Here is Virginia, as long as the coach has open tryouts, there is no limit to how many of the coach's players are on the coach's team.
Yet, in other states, a coach can't have even one of his/her own players on an out-of-season travel team that the coach is in charge of.
To get an accurate answer to your question, I'd contact your state high school association. Here is Virginia, that's www.vhsl.org. Of course, you can always just ask some of the older coaches at the area high schools. They will probably know.......or at least they will think they know! haha
But, of course, often the facts are actually just tradition. That's why I recommend you go all the way to the top for an answer to your question. For example, many people here in Virginia believe that in order for a student to play in a game, they must be present for school that day. It may be that way now, but it wasn't when I last coached a team in 2000. Students, teachers and even some coaches thought it was a VHSL rule, but it wasn't. So, if I believed my player was at home sick during the day, she was not only allowed to come to the game, but she was allowed to play if she told me she felt like playing.
You also asked about the high school coach being an assistant. This is also a question for your high school association.
