QuestionHi Tom,
Is it possible to have two setters and continue to substitute them for Hitters when they rotate to the front?
Can you substitute a setter and a Hitter as one substitution for the six per set?
I would like to run the 5-1 setup but I wonder if it's possible to just keep my setters in the back?
Your reply would be very much appreciated.
AnswerGood morning from the USA! Welcome to www.allexperts.com!
a) Substituting hitters for setters as setters enter the front row is perfectly legal! In fact, in many of my team's first tournaments this season, we did just that! We would make 2 subs every three rotations: A hitter in for the setter, our 2nd setter in for a hitter.
b) Then you speak of substitution limits. I'm not aware of a limit of 6, unless you're talking about international vball. Here in the USA, our USAV rules allow 12 and National Federation rules allow 18 per set! You are limited to 6? wow. I recommend you ouble-check the rule book. Maybe the six limit has exception for the same sub over and over. Don't know. If not, you may have to decide which setter is better, and go with a 5-1.
c) The 5-1 setup with setter in the back......I not 100% sure what you're describing. I think you mean, "Can I run a 6-2 with setters who play back row, and are subbed out when they enter the front row?" And that answer is definitely yes. Back to my (a) answer above, plus some college teams in the USA even use this offense when their setters are very good, but not tall enough to block effectively.
