Answer
Hello Brendon and welcome to AllExperts.com

My Name is Coach Tovar

First I would like to say congratulations because this must mean that you are a power hitter. A power hitter is some one who can play both positions effectively. I used to play opposite or right side when I was in my college club team.

Here are some things to remember when hitting on the right side. As we all know it is some what  more difficult for many players because unlike hitting on the left side where the ball comes towards your hitting hand if you are right handed. In an opposite, the ball has to pass your body and into the hitting hand. Unless you are left handed there should be no change. If you are right handed then here are a few things you can do to better this position.

Tips on hitting on the right side or opposite.

1. Your approach should be facing the net directly until you are better then you can approach the ball from outside.
2. Practice throwing the ball into the net but down the line.
3. Do no. 2 but practice throwing it at a higher net level.
4. Practice a shorter approach.
5. If by any chance try not to hit cross court unless the blockers are split at the time of the block.
6. If you can dink, dink right behind the blockers.
7. If the play is broken, still jump but place the ball down the line but behind the defensive player. Do this with both holds.
8. If there is a low set, hit the ball softly and straight up towards the blockers to receive a second chance. This only works if you pretend to hit a full spike.
9. If there is a low set, set the ball into the farthest blocker to your right so that the blocker can touch the ball last.
10. If the ball is set high but close to the net. Try to punch the ball with a one arm jump so that the ball will be touched by both of you and help land the ball on your side.
11. If the set is too high and outside, you can raise you arm to measure the net height and still hit down the line. Most blockers will not block if they see a free ball. They will always expect a soft hit to the middle but never a down the line hard hit. Practice that.
12.If you are late to the set, then hit the ball up while feet are still on the ground to better prepare you to get the ball again.
13. If you are late to the ball punch the ball towards the outside corner of the net at the last minute to have the blocker touch the ball last.
14. No matter what happens, if the set is high, never hit the ball slowly and give them a free ball for them to have a great chance at a point. Give the ball a fairly good hit and win a point that way.
15. If you have no chance but to set the ball over, set the ball to where the setter is coming from to so to distract the play. You can also set it to the corners just over the defensive players.
16.Because most blockers are taught to penetrate into the net on your side, it is easier to drop the ball right on their backs. You do this by creating a back spin with your fingers and hitting the ball very slowly. Pretty soon they will have to expect that and they may not give it their all to block all the way.

I can only help you with some techniques, the rest is up to experience. If you have any more questions please fell free to ask.
