Answer
I'm back.  Thank you for being patient!

Every volleyball coach hears this question.  We hear it every month of every year.

Here's my answer.

**  More important than timing is your 3-step spike approach.

PLEASE make sure you're not using a homemade spike approach.  You may dominate now with that funky footwork and kooky arm swing, but soon, when coaches & setters need you to do more, lesser athletes (who have better fundamentals) will take your place!   This goes for girls & guys!!  I just saw an athletically superior high school team win a conference tournament today.  But when those girls get to the college level, they and their screwed-up fundamentals will be sitting the bench until they can learn what they should have been taught in high school.

Now, let's discuss timing.

I have heard dozens of coaches, players and parents explain how to perfect the timing of hitting a high set.  I agree with none of them.

I see this topic in nearly every volleyball forum that I visit.   And I disagree with nearly every remedy I read.

And you won't find a remedy here.

However, I will give you a few hints that'll make you a better hitter tomorrow!

a) DON'T BE EARLY!!  If you're not exactly sure when to start, just try to make yourself wait until the last possible moment.  Then, if you're a little late, you can still tip/slam/roll.

b) Another way of saying (a) is "Late & fast".   What I'm trying to say is:  If you wait until the last possible moment to start your approach, and then EXPLODE after the ball as if you're going to be late...........that's when you will hit the ball the best!!

c) Finally, the only solution that I can give my players:  practice, practice, practice.  If you care and you practice, your timing will improve and you will eventually be pretty satisfied with it.

At the end of my 1992 season, I had a sophomore hitter on the JV team who was shaking her head saying, "Why can't I time a high set correctly?"  By the time she was a senior, she was our team MVP, she was 1st team All Region outside hitter in club ball and she tried out for a Division I team the next fall.

In review, timing will work itself you, IF you are willing to practice it enough.

I'm sorry that couldn't answer this question quicker.  But, thank you so much for being patient.  Now, have you visited www.coachhouser.com?  I hope you do b/c you will hundreds of smiling faces and a lot of free downloads for both parents and players.
