Reaching over net
Question
If the pass (errant) is almost to the top of the net can I reach over and block/hit/poke? What is allowable?
Answer
Hello Dave and welcome to www.AllExperts.com
My name is Coach Tovar
A. A ball coming towards the net and on the second hit can not be blocked, tipped, touched or moved in any way by any player from the opposite side.
B. No player from the opposite team can cross the plane onto the opponent's side on the second hit only. You can only block directly up.
C. Any penetration from the defensive team that causes or does not cause a disruption, even if there is penetration but they did not touch the ball is illegal. Again we are only talking about the second hit.
D. Regardless of the height of the ball, no player can penetrate into the opponents side on the second hit. The top referee will call this. This is a very normal mistake for players who's height over power those of the setter's who is much smaller.
These are my interpretations of the rule(s) so that younger readers can also understand this rule.
I hope this answers your question.
