Is this considered an attack for the stats?
Question
If a hitter receives a pass and pushes it over with two hands instead of an
overhead attack, is this considered an attack and if successful, is it to be
considered a kill statistically? Thank you.
Answer
Good afternoon and welcome to www.allexperts.com!
The answer to your question is definitely yes.
For high and middle, ANY attempt to end the rally is an attack, regardless of which hit it is, regardless of how the ball is taken over.
So, examples of an "attack" that may become a kill:
-> setter dump
-> 3rd hit two-hand push, or one hand dink, or roll shot, or one-hand slamma-jamma (refer to a previous answer by me here at allexperts).
-> 1st hit, two-hand push, when a digger is receiving a tip from the opponents!
-> 3rd hit bump over when the player is trying to hit a spot (not when she's just trying to keep the rally going).
So for stats in middle and high: Read her mind. Was she trying/hoping to end the rally when she took the ball over. If so, then give her an attack and, and if it was successful in ending the rally, then give a kill.
Now, according to NCAA stats, a player is given an attack at any time a 3rd hit goes over the net. That eliminates all this uncertainty. So, when the libero has to bump over a third hit from a shanked first contact, and a save by the setter, the libero is given an attack on the stat sheet.
