QuestionQUESTION: Good afternoon,
I'm trying to organize a volleyball tournament as a fundraiser for Relay for Life. I want the teams to have more than 1 game to play, but we also only have 1 day in which to do this. What is my best option for scheduling? Our gym will have two courts going at once. I've never done this type of thing before, and am feeling a little over my head!
Thanks for any help!
Marlene
ANSWER: Good afternoon Marlene and welcome to www.allexperts.com!
Is this adults? or kids?
Are these people serious bump-set-spike volleyball players, or just backyard/PE/rec center laugh/giggle players?
I ask this b/c your answers will indicate how much they can (and are willing to) play in one day.

QUESTION: Hi Coach,
I'm aiming for a laugh and giggle set. We're doing this for fun, not to try and enter the Olympics (although I'm sure some of our players are going to feel like it is an Olympic trial). I want to make an all day event, so we can raise more money, so I don't want them to play one game and go home, but I don't want to be there for 12 hours either. I'm thinking between 8 and 10 teams.
The people who have expressed interest in having a team join are quite excited about the idea. There will be an assortment of high school kids up to middle age players. I'm planning for the teams to be co ed, and probably ask for people to not to spike.
Thanks for your quick response!
Marlene
Thanks again!
ANSWER: Good afternoon!
Here's an idea. Ask for a rep from each team to be somewhere at a certain time. If there are 10 teams, then have the team reps draw #'s 1 through 10. Also, in advance, have a playing schedule created that the participants are unaware of. After #'s are drawn, then show the playing schedule. Here's an example of what I would consider:
RELAY FOR LIFE VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT:
Each match is 3 sets to 25 with a 50 minute time limit. If a match is not over after 50 minutes, the work team will stop the match so that the next teams can warm up. The work team will record the wins and losses on the poster board, and team reps will sign off on those results. Work teams: Please end matches at the 50-minute mark so that we don't run behind. If a set has not ended, the team that's ahead is declared the winner.
10am: 1 vs. 2 with 3 working. 4 vs. 5 with 6 working.
11am: 3 vs. 6 with 7 working. 8 vs. 9 with 10 working.
noon: 7 vs. 10 with 1 working. 2 vs. 3 with 4 working.
1pm: 1 vs. 4 with 5 working. 6 vs. 7 with 8 working.
2pm: 5 vs. 8 with 9 working. 10 vs. 1 with 2 working.
3pm: 9 vs. 2 with 3 working. 4 vs. 6 with 5 working.
4pm: 3 vs. 5 with 7 working. 8 vs. 10 with 9 working.
5pm. 7 vs. 9 with __ working.
Now, I just did it randomly, so I had to double-check to ensure that each team played and an equal number. Done, no problem. I have yet to check the equality of the working assignments. Yes, I know that it's not a round robin. Sorry. You may have 2 or 3 teams, therefore, go undefeated. OK, whatever.
Now, if I were you, I'd do one of these for how ever many teams you think you may have..... 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, etc. You sure don't want to do it spontaneously, while people are waiting for you, and then there's no time to make sure the # matches per team are equal.
Does that help any?

QUESTION: That sounds like a good set up. I think that would work well. So one final question. How would you come up with a winner if you had multiple teams undefeated?

AnswerGood afternoon!
Well, since each team is playing 3 matches, I have ensured that each team will play 8 sets. I guess there's a chance that two teams will both be 9-0, 8-1, etc. and tie for first place. If that's the case, I'd just give double awards..... unless you don't have enough, or they are too expensive. I guess you could add, "6pm: Playoff for first place, if necessary, with 3rd place team working".
I don't know if you know what I mean by "work" team. They are the refs, the scorekeepers, the line judges, etc.
The "no spike" rule is your call. Before I started coaching, I would play in those. But, now, that's like playing bball w/o dribbling, playing football w/o passing, playing soccer w/o running. A "no spike" vball league is why 7, 8, and 9 year olds have no clue how the game is played. It's like wrestling. :) How many 7th or 8th graders know one iota about real wrestling? All they've seen is the fake pro stuff, MMA, and what brothers and sisters do when they're horse-playing.
What else can we do for you? Just let us know.
