Which offense to use with what we got?
Question
Coach,
I play club volleyball for my university and i had a question about which offensive system we could use with the players we got. Last year we had two great setters and ran a 6-2, me being the shorter setter (5'5) i got subbed out when i reached the front row. Our other setter graduated last year and we dont really have another setter that can help me run the offense effectively. So im asking, should we run the 6-2 because of my height/blocking disadvantage or if i run the 5-1 what can we do to eliminate the blocking disadvantage? For example can we shift the OH and MB all the way over to the rightside to help me block or what do you suggest? Remember im only 5'5 and i can put up a mean soft block. Thanks a bunch for your help coach!

Hello Felix and welcome to www.AllExperts.com
My name is Coach Tovar
To make sure that all my readers young and old can understand some of my comments, I have chosen to use simple vocabulary words and interpret the rule for this sole purpose.
Well Felix when I used to play in a club team at my university when an international team came and asked me to be their setter. I am only 5'10 but all of our team players averaged 6'4". The only thing I had to do was play defense and be the all around setter. I would switch to the middle block position because most of the sets are hit at a 9'5" height or below which was something I could do as opposed to the outer sets where the average hitter hits the ball at 9'5" to 10'2". We ended up winning the whole season at 10-0.
There are several things you can do to make your team more successful in winning games when you have a 5-1 offense. If you run a 6-2 offense than that will of course give your team a great advantage. If your opponent is also playing a 5-1 then you only have to change several things.
1. Make sure you start in area 1 of course as their setter so that when you both turn into offensive players you will both be in the same page.
2. You will be opposite to the setter at this point so first Id the 2 front row hitters and make sure your Libero knows this too.
3. Go to the middle position in front of the setter. We know the setter can't jump or dink but they can set over you. Let your players know and make sure they cover the area behind you when you are in front of their setter. You can also switch your Libero right behind you at this point.
4. You can also pull back and give the blockers a one on one block. I used to do this and played off the tip ball. This was better than to be in the way of a blocker who had a better chance than myself.
5. You can also make sure you start in the middle and only help the blockers as a defensive player to cover a dink and or tip.
6. If you do decide to be in the middle and block make sure you tell the blockers to shift while you leave enough room for your blocker to block the shoulder to shoulder area of the incoming hitter .
7. We know that your opponents might identify you as a weak blocker so be ready for that.
8. If your opponents have their middle blocker in the middle and their opposite hitter then make sure your blocker is in the middle then you to the right of that blocker then your blocker blocking the opposite hitter. This will be a strong right block on your side.
9. You want to survive their front row attack and by doing the following things above, your team will have a better chance of preparing for a 5-1 offense.
10. If your players are really tall and your team has a good pass receive offense then I would suggest that you use a 6-2 with the closest player to a second setter help you run the offense.
11. If you do use a soft block and straight up block then make sure that your Libero is behind you to pick up any balls.
12. You can also perform a soft block while moving 12" inches away from the net and slightly tilting your arms backwards about 4" to 6" on top of your head. This will simulate a block of up to 9'5" due to the angle of the ball being hit with the amount of court behind you. As we know most players hit the ball behind the 10' foot line so by doing the block this way, the court gets smaller without you becoming taller.
I also have over 25 complete volleyball systems that help 5-1 offenses as well as all others by providing a constant offensive attack. In a nut shell you learn the system in about 2 hours once. After this every play which is never memorized but decoded through the system and is normally a 3 letter play ex. EDR lets everyone on the team know three things;1 which player goes first second or third in case of a crossing play, 2 which area to go to and 3 what set to hit.
All these things can be changed at any time during the game or before every play. The systems also come with 25 video links where instead of reading to learn the system, I explain it with illustrations. It also comes with 18 practice video links so that so don't have to think of this.
All play books are 100% trick plays and all come with and average of 32 to 100 illustrated plays and up to a list of 120 to 360 extra plays. Please visit the website for more information.
You can learn the system today and use it the next day so it's that easy to learn yet one of the most complicated systems in the world to break. Actually it is the only complete volleyball play attack system in the world.
I hope this answers your question. Please take the time to rate me. Any feedback you can provide for me will be great.
