Volleyball - Reach, Approach and Block Question
Question
I am 5'8" outside hitter, What would you considered to be a good standing reach,approach jump and block jump for someone of my height?
Answer
Good morning Blair and welcome to www.allexperts.com!
Here's what you want to know:
Standing reach: with your feet on the floor, and both arms stretched up the air (like you're blocking flat-footed), how high can you reach? For someone your height, I would guess 7'. If you have really long arms, maybe a little higher.
Block Jump Reach: Now, do the same as above, but bend your knees then JUMP as high as you can. How high can you reach? The average for someone your height: 8' 4". That's about 1 foot over the net. Most girls measure their standing and block jump up against a wall where the inches have already been marked on the wall prior to jumping. (If they have a device at their school known as a VERTEC, it's a little easier. To see what one is, just google it. It's a safe, easy -- but expensive -- way of measuring jumps.
)
Spike Approach Reach: Now, you get to SOAR!!! Now, do your spike approach and measure how high you can jump. This should be the highest of the three. You can try to do this against a wall, but be careful, and don't bang your knee on the wall!! Average for someone your height: maybe around 8'10".
OK, what else can I do for you? Maybe I'll meet you some day at a STAR volleyball camp. The past 3 summers, we've done 27, and we have 9 already scheduled for summer 2012! The business just keeps on growing.....Alaska, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia, etc. We can't wait for next summer. You can see all about us at www.coachhouser.com.
