Volleyball Rotation error and subsequent serving
Question
Hi,
I haven't score kept volleyball in some time and confused about a couple of situations.
1. If Team A serves out of rotation, we are instructed to notify the 2nd referee after the infraction. In that case, Team B would receive the point and would commence serving. Who would serve next time for Team A? (would it be the next position from the one that should have served when the infraction occurred). How is this documented on the score sheet?
2. Is there any difference in who serves next on Team A or the score keeping if the serve rotation error occurs after the first serve (i.e. Player 5 serves, but then the team rotates after winning the point)?
3. Is there any difference in who serves next on Team A or the score keeping if Team A is out of position, but the correct server is serving?
thanks
Glen
Answer
Hello again Glen!
I was sick yesterday at work; so sick, that I came home, went to bed and even missed my vball team practice. :(
Here are the answers to your questions:
1) If Team A serves out of order, yes, you are correct in that Team B gets the point. The next server for Team A is who would be the next server normally. So, if your scorebook says that #18 SHOULD be serving if there had been no screwup earlier, than #18 should be the next server.
2) No, no difference. Whenever the scorekeeper notices a girl serving out of order, she notifies the R2. The R2 stops the game and puts the offending team in the order they should have been in. All points scored by the wronger server are wiped off the scoreboard and scorebook. Team B is awarded a point and they rotate to serve. The next server for team A is whoever should have been serving, if there had not been any screwup.
3) No, no difference. If girls are overlapping (the word used in the NF rulebook) or in a rotational error (USAV rulebook), there is no change in the serving order for Team A.
It's such a coincidence that you mentioned this. My team was playing in a tournament on Sunday Feb 26th. One of our opponents' head coaches was changing their lineup a lot, and three times his team served out of order. So they lose whatever points had been scored, the opponents get the ball, a point, and the game continues. This may happen to my team once in 5 years. We get called for overlaps more often b/c I will change my serve receives in a flash ("Jenny helping corner, Samantha come out in serve receive!"), or sometimes our serve receive formations "morph" a little..... and a good R2 will catch it. This will happen once or twice a season.

Hope you have a wonderful week! My team will in the Shamrock Festival this weekend. We're a fifteens team, and we're seeded #15 in the 90-team 15/16 division. We're proud of that.
