Setter? or libero? Is it too late to switch?
Question
Hello, I am a 15 year old female division one, plays all around setter and have been for 5 years. I am only 5'4'' and am thinking about switching to libero in order to play at a D1 college as some coaches have told me I could. I have never really trained as a libero but would like to, do you think it is to late to switch positions? I really want to play in college and have has coaches tell me I could be a starter at a D1 school, but would have a tough time playing at all as a setter. Could I still switch to libero or is it too late?
Answer
Good Sunday morning!
No I haven't forgotten about you. :) Actually, I've been thinking about your question a lot.
Here is my recommendation: What do YOU want to do? If you LOVE setting, then keep doing it. But, if you think you will LOVE playing college ball more than you love setting, then try to change positions. If you choose to change, I recommend that you go to every camp this summer saying, "I am a libero," and ask them not to make you set.
I know that it's a tough decision. Do what you're really at, or do what will earn you playing time at the next level.... really tough decision. But, again, I recommend that you do what you really WANT, then go for it and don't look back. :)
I hope this helps some, and I apologize for not answering more quickly.
What else can I do for you? If there's ever anything, please let me know.
And I hope you've had time to visit us at www.coachhouser.com. I think you'll love the smiling faces.

Good evening:
Welcome to www.allexperts.com. It's wonderful to hear from you.
* It's really late here on the east coast and the alarm goes off at 5:50am tomorrow.... so I'll have to wait a day or two to answer your question.
* But I'll tell you this before going to bed: D1 vball isn't all that. I've seen many of my own players who wanted, wanted, wanted (just like you) to play D1 vball.... then after a few months, away from home, often devilishly mean coaches, no hugs from mom/dad, long LONG bus trips, harder schoolwork than they've ever experienced.....the shine of D1 ball disappears really fast. Yeah, we see those women on TV, and they look like they're having fun. And, when the camera is on them, and whistles are blowing, that's definitely when IT IS fun. But, for some women -- for many women -- that's about the ONLY time it's fun.
I know. My stepdaughter was a D1 player. I was proud, excited.... for a few weeks. Then I saw her misery grow and grow and grow until it peeked her senior year. She was playing. Playing a lot. That wasn't the issue. It was how she and her teammates were treated. It was so sad. It was heartbreaking. I'll never forget it.
Well I typed more than I meant to. :) I hope to tell you more positives in a day or two. Yes, I do have some positives to tell you. :)
Thank you and hope you have a wonderful day tomorrow!
