Approach Reach? Vertical Reach?
Question
What's the difference between approach touch and approach vertical? The difference between block touch and block approach? I am a volleyball mom and I am trying to figure this out for recruiting forms that ask for different things. What is the normal or believable range for each of these? Does these figures sound normal to you, approach touch 111", approach vertical 27", block touch 109" and block vertical 26". My daughter is 5"7". Thanks for your time.
Answer
Good evening, and welcome to www.allexperts.com!
First: Here are the definitions.
Standing reach: with your feet on the floor, and both arms stretched up the air (like you're blocking flat-footed), how high can you reach? For someone your height, I would guess 7'. If you have really long arms, maybe a little higher.
Block Jump Reach: Now, do the same as above, but bend your knees then JUMP as high as you can. How high can you reach? The average for someone your height: 8' 4". That's about 1 foot over the net. Most girls measure their standing and block jump up against a wall where the inches have already been marked on the wall prior to jumping. (If they have a device at their school known as a VERTEC, it's a little easier. To see what one is, just google it. It's a safe, easy -- but expensive -- way of measuring jumps.
)
Spike Approach Reach: Now, you get to SOAR!!! Now, do your spike approach and measure how high you can jump. This should be the highest of the three. You can try to do this against a wall, but be careful, and don't bang your knee on the wall!! Average for someone your height: maybe around 8'10".
You numbers are reasonable; but ONLY if your daughter is an impressive athlete. If your daughter is average, then your numbers are probably not correct. To be able to reach 9'3" at 5'7" is very impressive. And verticals over 25" get our attention also.
OK, what else can I do for you? Maybe I'll meet you some day at a STAR volleyball camp. The past 3 summers, we've done 27, and we have 11 scheduled for summer 2012! We started #6 today. The business just keeps on growing.....Alaska, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia, etc. We can't wait for tomorrow. You can see all about us at www.coachhouser.com.
