Whats the best way to drill the 6-back defense?
Question
QUESTION: What's the best way to drill this defense?
ANSWER: Good morning:
I'm a high school teacher who teaches geometry until 2pm each day. Then, my wife and I are leaving for a trip out of town for the weekend. I will probably be able to answer your question tonight after we arrive at our destination.
Can you tell me: Are you considering leaving your deep middle girl in the 6zone during the opponents' outside sets? or move her over to the line? This will have an impact on my answer.
It's great to hear from you. I hope you have a wonderful Friday.

QUESTION: I generally leave her @6.
Answer
Good morning A.J.:
Now, my wife and I are in a condo for the weekend...and no internet. So I'm a cafe using theirs until my wife wakes up. :)
This is how I drill defense: I watch the players execute defense, I watch and fix, give the girls another chance at it, and watch and fix again. During the season, we have to do such a drill about once a month to fix all the little issues that have evolved over the weeks. Here's a drill that I use.
Drill #8: Coach Behind The Defense
Age Level: Middle School and Up.
Coach will place 6 players on defense, starting at base. All other players are on the other side of the net. Three of the 搊thers?are standing on chairs to simulate an outside attack, a middle attack and a right side attack. All the rest of the others are handers/shaggers. Coach stands along the endline BEHIND the defense.
When everyone is ready, the coach will point to one of the 3 players on the chairs. She will smack the ball, give the six players a moment to shift to the appropriate defense, then hit the ball at the defense. The defense抯 job: To dig, set and get the ball back over. When the six achieve a certain a goal, six new defensive players are inserted.
Purpose: Defensive corrections and adjustments can be made by a coach who抯 watching the drill, not initiating it.
Three Variations: (1) Coach can demand the defense to attack only; (2) Coach can demand the defense to do special attacks; (2) Coach only gives points when he sees a great dig or great hustle play to save the rally! Therefore players on the chairs are encouraged to rip the ball or tip nasty!!
This is one of the drills that I sell in my "I Can't Wait Drill Collection". It allows me to watch my defense, make sure the players are in the right place at the right itme, and make sure it is working as well as it can.
I asked you about where you put your 6-person, b/c that's something you can watch as well: Is she staying in her position until she's sure the block has closed.
I hope that you're going to have a wonderful weekend. If you have a moment, please visit me at www.coachhouser.com. You can find the links to the Drill Collection, and I think you'll love the smiling faces.
