Hello Sydnie and welcome to www.AllExperts.com
My name is Coach Tovar
"What is the difference between a set and a jumpset and when should you use each one?"
There are so many advantages and disadvantages to both but since most people know about a regular set where the setter who plays all around has to come from the back row and is usually never found being and setting in the front row, then let me just explain the difference to a jump set.
Reasons to learn or perform a jump set
1. College - if you are planning to go to college, most recruiters want to see this type of set plus they use it in most offenses.
2. Power set - this type of set will help you set a ball from a long distance, from anywhere in or outside the volleyball court.
3. A Front row threat - in the front row, you will be able to disguise a set into a quick dump, spike or other set threat you can think of.
4. Blockers Delight - to provide an easier set drop over the blockers as they attempt to block you or your team mate.
5. One less Blocker - you and your hitters will have one less blocker and one more threat to worry about.
6. Defense Confusion - the defense will have to play a certain way they might not be able to adjust to in a quick manner.
7. Faster threat - In Mexico they play a faster offense and so the defense is always kept on guessing mode.
8. Quick Set/Dump/Spike Combination Play - to give a quick set to the middle quick, shorter distance between the set and the placement of the ball, and having the setter eventually dump or spike the ball themselves.
9. Defense - The plays becomes faster and more confusion for the defense, making their defense subject to too much movement.
10. Different Set Types - lets you set other types of sets like a shoot, rainbow front and back row, black hole or backwards set into the left front area etc.
11. Saving many bad balls - because you are already expecting a fast ball towards the net, you will be able to save other types of bad bumps towards the net, like a tight ball, high ball, and a possible net fault.
12. More Play Types - you can set other types of quick sets like a shoot from the back row to the left front with more speed and power.
13. Great Athletic ?recruiters want to see an athlete as part of a well rounded player who is teachable as well.
14. Extra tool - "The number of weapons on your team will depend on how well you get to know each and everyone of your players" Tovar
