College & Help

Question
Hi,
I am a freshman softball player and I have a couple questions. When you are watched by college scouts, do they only scout you for the position you are playing, or do they try to judge your overall ability? I'm asking because I play catcher because I am the best catcher my team has, but I'm better at shortstop. Will it hurt my chances of getting into a college to play if I try to help my team by playing catcher.I bat clean-up and I catch good, I usually make 1 to 3 outs a game and get on base(I have played 6 games and I have 2 K's this year).Should I ask to be moved to somewhere I play better or should I stay and give my team a better chance to win? Also, do you know any drills I can practice at home by myself or just with my sister to better my game? Thanks for all your help!

Answer
Hi Krista

Are you refering to your high school team or travel team?

In many causes high school and college season coincide; therefore, college scouts don't watch high school games. If they do it's usually to see one player they already know about and are interested in. Scouts are more likely to watch summer travel team games. The competition in travel ball is much more extensive. Scouts usually have list of players they are going to look at and they go the travel team tournaments so they can see several players over a weekend.

How do scouts get your name and how do you get on the list? Sometimes high school or travel coaches will be contacted by scouts. However the best way it to get your name out is on your own by making a "skills" tape and by contacting colleges your interested in. But don't do this until after your high school sophomore year.
