Ball hit R1 who tried to avoid being hit by the ball

2016/7/15 18:02:27

Question
Hi,

Situation: R1 is on 2nd base, B2 is batting and made a solid hit that bounce on the ground by the pitcher mound and hit R1 who was advancing to 3rd base but accidently got hit by the ball. Is she out? My interpretation is that, if the base runner intentionally hit the ball, then she is out and that if she tried to avoid being hit, she should not be out. Please clarify this.

Thank in advance...

RL

Answer
Hi Rick,
If r1 is hit by a fair batted ball while not in contact with a base and before it passes an infielder, excluding the pitcher, or if it passes an infielder and any other fielder has an opportunity to make a play by rule the runner is out.

the runner intentions have no bearing.

hope this helps
Mark
