Question
My question is if there is a runner at first base with 1 out and the batter hits a fast ground ball to the first baseman but the runner never leaves first base, can he tag the runner on first base and the bag to pull a double play? is one of the runners safe? did the runner on first have to leave the base? I know he can throw the ball to second for the force out and then back to first for the double play. please enlighten me. Thank you

Answer
Hi Rob,
Yes, No, Yes

Ok here's the explanation, on a force place the runner no longer has a legal right to occupy the base he is being forced from.  So the fact he is on the base makes no difference, tag the runner step on first =s a double play.

The answer to your 3rd question is yes he has to leave the base because he is no longer entitled to it but of course he can be tagged for an out even if he doesn't.  If you meant does he have to leave to be tagged out the answer is no.

Hope this helps
