Softball Hitting and Fielding Performance Goals

Question
I want to utilize performance goal setting with our softball team. I'm having difficulty identifying these goals however. The only thing I can think of is tracking individual or team performance on doing things in practice or in games such as percentage of bunts that were executed properly, percentage of times that pitches were hit in play, etc. This doesn't focus on the scoreboard but I struggle with the fact that a girl would get credit for executing a bunt, hit, etc. when she used terrible form. Assuring use of correct form is extremely difficult w/o maybe taping her swings. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Marve
Answer
Hello Marvin
Performance goals should be specific, and they should be challenging but not too difficult to achieve. The two key questions to determine if goal setting is successfully being implemented are: Can I measure it? Can I see it?
Performance goals which emphasize individual skill improvement are easier to measure. Some examples:
Speed drills can be measured with time. Softball rules can be measured with written tests. Accuracy can be measured with percentage.
Correct mechanics are difficult to measure without video. I wouldn't include mechanics or correct form as a performance goal.
However using video analysis of skill, technique and execution during practice drills and /or games is a good idea for improving mechanics.
